Capitals suffer another blow
Injuries are threatening to take a big bite out of Columbia High’s season.

The Capitals, a top-10 team in Class 2A when the season began, have seen three of their top players sustain injuries that put their seasons in jeopardy.

The latest was quarterback/defensive back Chris Payne, a South Carolina commitment. Payne suffered a broken ankle in the first quarter of Friday night’s 19-6 Homecoming loss to Brookland-Cayce that Columbia coach Kemper Amick said will keep him out for the remainder of the season.

Payne’s injury comes on the heels of the torn ACL defensive back Demario Jeffery, another USC commitment, sustained two weeks ago.

Jeffery did not play against Brookland-Cayce. But Amick said he is mulling his medical options and has not ruled out a return this season.
