Brotherly love shines through on the court
On a cold February night in Charlotte nearly 30 years ago, Al Daniel witnessed the true meaning of “sibling rivalry” — though in his family, the “sibling” part far outweighed any idea of “rivalry.”

His Furman basketball team was en route to an 83-70 victory against ACC power North Carolina in the now-defunct North-South Doubleheader. Daniel, a 6-foot-4 senior forward, watched as the Paladins’ skinny freshman point guard — his younger brother, Mel — stepped to the free-throw line.

“He looked so small!” Al, 52, said of the 6-foot-2, 165-pound Mel — or Melvin, as Al more commonly calls him. “He had no idea how hard I was pulling for him.”

Not for the shots, the Paladins or the upset; for his brother. “I thought, Please, Melvin, please make these free throws. And he did.”

Al laughed. “He won’t remember that,” he said.
