Trying to pay the rent, one can at a time
Samuel Black hoped the morning after USC’s home football opener would be one of his biggest days of the year.

With the Gamecocks shutting out N.C. State 34-0, his spirits were high.

“You know there are some cans down here this morning,” he said. “Carolina win, too? You know they were partying last night.”

Black’s food comes from food stamps and his clothes from The Cooperative Ministry. His only expense is the $50-a-month rent that he pays for a one-room apartment with a stove in the corner. He pays for it by collecting and selling empty beer cans.

Black could collect cans along Two Notch Road, near where he lives. But Five Points — after football games — is where the big money is.
