Spirit Airlines leaving Columbia |
Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier, is departing Columbia Metropolitan Airport less than a year after it began offering service.The airline’s last flight out of Columbia to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., will be March 6.Spirit leaves 2½ weeks before another low-cost carrier, Allegiant, arrives in Columbia.Spirit filled on average 65 percent of it seats out of Columbia, airport executive director Mike Flack said. Low-cost carriers need to average 85 percent to make money on a route, he said.“The market is just not there for their type of service,” Flack said. “In an economy like we have, leisure travel is one of the first things to go, and that’s their whole business.” |
