Sandy Islanders mourn boat victims |
MURRELLS INLET — Kenneth Robinson slowly walked to the end of the boat dock Saturday morning and bent over to pick up a bundle of six carnations. As he rose, he peered out over the water that claimed the lives of his sister, niece and cousin.They were among the six people aboard a 14-foot fiberglass boat Wednesday night when it capsized in the Waccamaw River just 10 feet from Sandy Island, an area only reachable by watercraft. Three passengers died and an infant remains hospitalized, while family members and neighbors continue to grieve.The Georgetown County School District, which operates a “school boat,” is offering rides from the mainland to the island until Tuesday for those who want to visit family members.On Saturday morning, a handful of boats traveled from Sandy Island to the mainland. Many residents in the dock area identified themselves as relatives of the Pyatts and Robinsons but declined to comment.Others, some from out of state, drove to the area to learn more about the accident. Marcus Webster of Georgetown said he was shocked at the condition of the boats. |
