Reactors are nothing new
JENKINSVILLE — Nuclear power has been a part of this community’s fabric for 50 years.

In 1958, South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. and three other utilities received a license from the federal government to build a 17-megawatt test reactor here.

The reactor — the first of its kind in the Southeast — was built next to SCE&G’s Parr Hydro Station, along the Broad River, by the Carolinas-Virginia Nuclear Power Associates.

Joining the Columbia-headquartered utility in the experiment were Duke Energy, Carolina Power & Light and Virginia Electric and Power.

Construction on the $30 million project began in October 1960.
