Lexington considering tougher towing standards
Lexington County is considering a crackdown on towing companies that would impose the toughest county standards in the Midlands, if not the state.

As drafted, the proposed regulations would:

• Create a disciplinary board that could suspend towing companies if they take too long to tow vehicles, reject more than one-fourth of calls for service, or violate any county or state law

• Curtail the practice of requiring upfront, cash payments by allowing motorists to use credit cards

• Raise basic towing rates to $100, or about 18 percent, to bring them more in line with the Highway Patrol’s rates
