Councilman accused of biting, hitting son charged |
Bluffton Town Council member has been charged with simple assault and battery after he allegedly bit and punched his son during a weekend altercation, a Bluffton police report issued Monday said. Charlie Wetmore, 43, of Pine Ridge, and his 16-year-old son got into an argument Saturday after his son didn't make weight requirements for his wrestling team, the report said. The two began to wrestle as the argument got heated, and the 150-pound son pinned Wetmore, who weighs 245 pounds, to the floor, the report said. Wetmore then bit him on the lower leg to get free, according to the report. Family members attempted to calm Wetmore, but about 10 minutes later, he went to his son's room and punched him in the head, the report said. Family members broke up the fight, and Wetmore's wife called police, according to the report. Officers at the scene said the boy's head was swollen. The bite left an impression but did not break the skin, according to the report. Wetmore released the following statement Monday to the media via e-mail: |
