Clemson professor gets research grant
The National Institutes of Health awarded Naren Vyavahare, a bioengineering professor at Clemson, more than $1.5 million over four years so he can improve the durability of tissue heart valves.

Heart valves taken from pigs are frequently used in human heart replacement procedures, but more than 50 percent fail in five to 15 years.

The replacement valves are believed to fail because of degeneration and calcification.

Vyavahare has been studying calcification in heart valves for nine years.
