Byrd named new S.C. State board chairman
Lumus Byrd has been named chairman of the S.C. State University Board of Trustees, an Orangeburg newspaper is reporting this morning.

Byrd was elected during a trustees meeting Thursday, The (Orangeburg) Times and Democrat says. He will replace Maurice Washington who has led the board for the past six years.

According to the university, Byrd recently was awarded by the Presbyterian College and first Presbyterian Church of Clinton for his volunteerism and community service.

In addition to serving as an S.C. State trustee, Byrd is the current chairman of Presbyterian College’s Board of Visitors and serves on the board of directors of the Associated Marine Institute, the Clinton YMCA, the Laurence County Literacy Council, the Laurens Country Community Foundation, the Rotary Club of Clinton, the U.S. Selective Service System, and on the advisory board of Carolina First Bank, according to S.C. State.

Byrd also was presented this year with the Order of the Silver Crescent, South Carolina’s highest honor for volunteer and community service, by Gov. Mark Sanford.
