A look back: Harbison Agricultural College
Editor’s Note: Every day in February, The State newspaper is featuring a historic photograph showing an aspect of black life in South Carolina.

This undated photograph was taken at Harbison Agricultural College and shows men, likely students, talking to an instructor about chickens.

Harbison was founded in 1885 by a Washington, D.C., minister as a school to educate young African-Americans. The school’s curriculum focused on agriculture but also included instruction on literature, music and art.

The school closed in 1958. Part of the property is now Midlands Technical College, Harbison campus.
