17 voters, four debates, an infinite number of opinions |
The State newspaper put out a call to readers to watch the presidential and vice presidential debates and discuss them afterward. On Friday, 17 readers held a wide-ranging post-debate discussion about the first exchange between Republican presidential nominee John McCain and Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. The panel will meet again Thursday when Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin debate. The panel consists of five Republicans, six Democrats and six independents. During Friday’s debate, there were many disagreements, especially on the war in Iraq. But there was some consensus, too.The panel agreed both candidates were careful not to fully commit to a Wall Street bailout plan. And the panel said neither candidate showed the political courage to say the economic crisis — along with growing entitlement spending and promises both made — might mean raising, instead of cutting, taxes. |
