Area flirts with snow chance tonight
If no snow fell overnight, don’t fret. There’s another shot for a dusting tonight.

Temperatures are expected to sink below freezing tonight, and there’s a slight chance of snow showers, according to the National Weather Service. The best chance will be between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m.

The Midlands has been flirting with the possibility of snow for a week.

The weather system that prompted the first snow predictions moved up the Atlantic coast Monday but shifted farther offshore than expected, cutting down on the chance of rain or snow in the Midlands.

A second pulse of cold air from the north will move into the state tonight, possibly accompanied by a little moisture.

Army exhibit honors black soldiers
How black soldiers have served their country will be featured in a traveling exhibit that stops this week at the S.C. State Museum.

The exhibit, part of the Army’s celebration of Black History Month, will be in the museum’s Vista Room today through Thursday. Columbia native Brig. Gen. Arnold Gordon-Bray will host an invitation-only reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Bray is deputy commander of the U.S. Army Cadet Command, which oversees Reserve Officer Training Corps programs in colleges and high schools.

Black troops have fought in every U.S. conflict, including the Revolutionary War.

“Throughout its history, the U.S. Army has shown commitment to diversity and takes special pride in acknowledging African-Americans who have served this country with honor and distinction,” said Lt. Col. Heyward Stackhouse, a professor of military science at S.C. State University.

Lexington mayor presses for road work
Lexington Mayor Randy Halfacre pledged Monday “not to leave a stone unturned” in seeking federal aid for road improvements.

Town leaders want $5.5 million to widen a half-dozen intersections to ease congestion on U.S. 378, he said in his fifth State of the Town speech.

It’s the same amount sought last year — without success. But town leaders hope to get a share of aid promised to combat the recession.

So far, town officials have $6 million in hand for a $70 million package that includes later widening Main Street (U.S. 1) and Lake Drive (S.C. 6).

The three roads are major commuter routes and local commercial strips. All converge in downtown Lexington.

Panel OKs overhaul of ports authority
A state Senate panel cleared the way Monday for a measure overhauling the ailing State Ports Authority.

In an unusual Monday meeting, the panel voted to end the governor’s ability to remove authority members, and to establish a new advisory board to help the state’s ports regain a leading position in the shipping business.

The fast-moving bill now goes before the full Senate Transportation Committee.

Gov. Mark Sanford has threatened to veto the bill if it ends his authority to remove authority members “at will.” His spokesman said the governor still opposes the measure.

“Our ports are in a critical stage in South Carolina, and we are going to either move forward or backward,” said Sen. Larry Grooms, R-Berkeley, chairman of the subcommittee that unanimously approved the bill after a two-hour public hearing.
